Toilet Training

As I’m readying myself to go plow once again, I am thinking how much I wanted this snowfall late Thursday so that my girls would have a snow day.  Funny, as a parent I want the snowflake dump as much as I did as a child.  I believe that almost all of us wish for a snow day whether we are going to elementary school, college, work or nowhere.   There is something so warm about a crap load of snow.  I think more than anything it is the idea that we are closed in our home and no need or perhaps ability to leave.  Comforting.  No exterior forces, no external exchanges.  Even in college when I lived alone, a snow day was a gift.  Pure bliss.  As a parent a snow day is not quiet with my girls screaming for joy, but it is calming.  A day snuggling on the couch with no thoughts except about the moment.  Is that the desire we cloak with “snow day”.    Being in the moment?  Is it really that difficult to take the time for closed silence, so much so that we need Mother Nature to rescue us?  I think that it is, especially in an age where the outside follows us everywhere with a grasp of the phone.  Yes, everywhere.  You know you read while on the porcelain throne.  I once again submit to you that wine can be your respite.  On a day, just a regular day, turn your phone off or better yet, leave it in the water closet and put on some quiet music—I prefer Cocteau Twins or Phillip Glass—and crack a bottle of your favorite wine.  Now lean back and concentrate on the flavors and sounds.  Perhaps entertain a wonderful memory or better yet make the now your memory and breathe.  You need not even be alone, look at the person next to you and let your smile be the words spoken and breathe.   Writing about this, I am longing it myself and know that it will happen once I escape the tractor and plowing (for your safety).   And just as after a snow day, we are more calm, centered and thoughtful, I will let my wine moment offer the same.  So cherish the snow day, but know that you can create your own snow day or snow moment if you just take the time.   Life rocks!

Stay warm, stay safe and stay peaceful.

I promise to be funnier next time.

Cheers
